A&D EW-i Series Triple Range Compact Precision Balance – Jewellery Use

The A&D EW-i Series Triple Range Compact Precision Balance represents an advanced evolution of A&D's top-selling EK/EW series, featuring innovative triple range weighing capability that provides three distinct weighing ranges within a single compact instrument. Trade Approved by the National Measurement Institute of Australia (NMI #6/4C/230), the EW-i series delivers exceptional versatility with capacities ranging from 30g to 12kg across three selectable weighing ranges—each optimized for different resolution requirements within the same balance. For example, the EW-150i offers 30g × 0.01g, 60g × 0.02g, and 150g × 0.05g ranges, while the flagship EW-12Ki provides 3000g × 1g, 6000g × 2g, and 12000g × 5g ranges, enabling users to select the optimal resolution for their specific application without needing multiple balances. The triple-range design is particularly valuable for jewellery weighing, where users can switch seamlessly between high-resolution modes for small gemstones or precious metal fragments and higher-capacity modes for larger items or batches, all with NMI trade approval for legal transactions. The large 16mm character height backlit 7-segment LCD display with wide viewing angle ensures clear visibility even in poor lighting conditions or at oblique angles, while the display refresh rate of 10 times per second provides real-time weight information and rapid stabilization for efficient operation in busy commercial and laboratory environments.

Engineered for portability and durability in demanding applications, the EW-i series features a rugged, low-profile design with sealed key panel protection against dust and spills, stainless steel weighing pan for easy cleaning and corrosion resistance, and compact dimensions (190W × 218D × 53-55H mm) with small footprint suitable for space-constrained work areas. Advanced functionality includes 9 built-in weighing units (g, oz, lb, ozt, dwt, ct, mom, GN, tl) plus counting mode with Automatic Counting Accuracy Improvement (ACAI) supporting up to 15,000 pieces and percentage mode for comparative weighing applications. The standard comparator function with HI/OK/LO annunciator enables checkweighing operations, while full digital calibration with optional user-definable mass setting and GLP compliance with I.D. and serial number outputs support quality management and regulatory documentation requirements. Standard RS-232C data interface enables connectivity to printers, computers, and data management systems, with optional comparator/relay output (EKW-04i) for process control integration. Operating on AC adapter (included) or optional rechargeable Ni-MH battery pack (EKW-09i) for true portability, the EW-i series functions reliably from -10°C to 40°C with leveling feet and level bubble for precise setup, security ring to prevent theft, and overload protection to withstand hard use. Meeting sensitivity drift specifications of 20ppm/°C (10°C-30°C), the EW-i series is backed by a comprehensive three-year warranty, making it ideal for retail trade, jewellery weighing, laboratory analysis, manufacturing quality control, shipping and receiving, and any application requiring legal-for-trade certification with the flexibility of multiple weighing ranges in a single portable, rugged instrument.

  • NMI Trade Approval — Selected EW-i models are NMI Trade Approved (NMI approval number: #6/4C/230).
  • NMI Verification Certificate — By Australian law, any NMI Trade Approved model must have an official NMI Verification Certificate before it can be used for trade purposes. This certificate is available from us for an additional fee
  • We can supply an official NMI Verification Certificate (legal-for-trade compliance) for each EW-i balance at an additional cost of $100 (inc. GST). Simply call us on 1300 812 450 to add it to your order before shipping.

Trade Approved Balance Verification

When a balance receives NMI/NSC certificate of approval, it is certified under a specific accuracy class that defines the performance parameters required for legal-for-trade applications. A critical parameter is the verification interval—the minimum certified increment for trade use. Due to the high number of internal divisions in modern balances, the verification interval for trade approval typically differs from the balance's display resolution. For example, the GX-4002A displays weights to 0.01g, but its trade-approved verification interval is 0.1g.

Most trade-approved balances continue to display finer increments (often indicated by brackets or similar notation), though some models like the Class III EK-i completely suppress the last digit, while the EW-150i eliminates an entire weighing range. The verification interval represents the certified accuracy for legal-for-trade purposes and is the official measurement increment recognized for commercial transactions. Our trade-approved models are listed with their accuracy class and verification interval specifications to assist in selecting the appropriate balance for your regulatory requirements.

A&D EK, EK-i, & EW-i Series Compact Balance Comparison:

  • EK Series This is the latest generation high-resolution model in the Equa line. It builds on the success of the EK-i with enhanced performance, improved capacities, and refined electronics while maintaining the same compact and durable design.
  • EK-i Series (High Capacity) The well-established high-precision single-range balances. Ideal when you need consistently fine readability (e.g. 0.01 g) across the entire capacity. Great for labs and applications requiring high accuracy.
  • EW-i Series (NMI models available) The versatile “all-rounder”. It features triple-range technology — the balance automatically changes resolution depending on the weight placed on it. This makes it very practical when you regularly weigh both very light and relatively heavy items on the same scale.

Which one should you choose?

  • Need the highest possible accuracy? → Go with the EK Series or EK-i Series.
  • Need flexibility to weigh a wide variety of items without switching balances? → Choose the EW-i Series.
